Kangaroo Island: asbestos treatment to urgently affected properties - making your property safe

As a result of the recent bushfires, the South Australian Government is rolling out the South Australian State Disaster Waste Management Plan, led by Green Industries SA (GISA). SA Police are visiting properties within the fire area, assessing damage and identifying areas of concern, such as sites containing asbestos. Sites containing asbestos are a priority for waste management on Kangaroo Island to reduce environmental and health impacts in the community.

Your property might be identified as having potential asbestos waste. If so, GISA will apply a treatment to your property that traps finer particles that might contain asbestos dust.

This treatment is called Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall, or 'Stonewall' for short  and it may be sprayed on your property to cover any waste potentially containing asbestos until the material can be safely recovered and transported to landfill.

Stonewall is:

  • an odourless gel that is sprayed over waste material that has a greenish tinge to it
  • not hazardous
  • only applied by approved South Australian Government contractors.

There is no cost to you for the application of this treatment.

If Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall is applied to your property, an easily identifiable marker peg will be placed at the entrance to your property. If you see this peg on your property, please do not remove it, and please do not disturb materials suspected of containing asbestos. The peg will be removed once asbestos removal has taken place, but do not attempt to clean asbestos yourself and avoid contact with the site until the peg is removed.

Asbestos treated property - what does the peg look like?

  • An easily identifiable marker peg will placed at the entrance to your property.
  • If you see this peg, please do not remove it, and please do not disturb materials suspected of containing asbestos.
  • In all cases, contact your insurance company first to confirm their instructions on when waste can be removed.
  • Only use licensed contractors. You can find a list of licensed asbestos inspectors and removalists here.
